TCP applauds Rep. Spiller for filing HB 2922 to ensure appropriate and responsible health insurance practices that protect Texans
(AUSTIN, Texas) - The Texas Coalition of Patients commends Rep. David Spiller (Jacksboro) for filing House Bill 2922 (HB 2922). HB 2922 is the companion bill to SB 815, filed by Senator Charles Schwertner. The intent of this bill is to prohibit health insurance companies from using artificial intelligence (AI) to delay, deny or modify claims.
It’s widely reported that insurance companies are using AI to review and deny prior authorization requests. Yet, no consumer protections exist under current law to regulate the use of AI and ensure transparency. HB 2922 is critical to ensure that medical professionals are making life-saving treatment decisions.
"We are encouraged that the movement to fight for responsible care for Texans is gaining momentum,” said Texas Coalition for Patients spokesperson Katherine McLane. "Each patient has their own unique history and experience. Medical professionals, not an algorithm, should carefully consider their treatment plan.
HB 2922 prohibits health insurers from using AI to delay, deny or modify claims. Additionally, the bill grants the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) the authority to inspect and audit health plans to ensure compliance, holding insurance providers accountable for the integrity of their decision-making processes.
